The photographic journey of GILBERT W. ARIAS, a Seattle/Tacoma based Photojournalist..

In 2009, like so many of my newspaper colleagues I found myself unemployed after the 146-yr-old newspaper I worked at closed its doors and moved to a web only edition. Some 12-years later I find I’m still mourning the loss of another great American industry, the daily newspaper.

Skateboarding Meca

This was a self-assigned photo essay that I produced for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer
In 2004 local skateboarders faced with the closure of their favorite skate parks began the task of building a DIY park located on a section of abandon city land below the roadway of the Seattle viaduct.
Today The Marginal Way Skate Park has become the premiere skate park in the Northwest and the Mecca for skaters and visitors from around the world.

Semper Fi Dad

On Friday evening my wife’s father Richard Earle passed away peacefully and is now with his son “Ricky” who passed away 10-days before. Richard was an intelligent and wonderful man, a loving and caring father and my best friends.
He was a retired Boeing Electrical Technician who worked on many projects including the Voyager space program.
Earle was a WWII U.S. Marine combat veteran who earned a Purple Heart while fighting for our country in the Pacific theater. He was part of the 1st Marine Brigade who fought at Guadalcanal, and was in the 5th wave to land on Guam where he was wounded. After recovering he was assigned to the 6th Marine Division, and fought on the infamous Sugar Loft Hill on Okinawa.
We miss you Dad, be at peace and remember, Semper FI Marine…

Photo shows Richard (center), sharing a smoke with WWII correspondent Ernie Pyle 1945.
